The Lowly Footer

The Lowly Footer, Lowly Worm, Richard Scary

Footers. Yup, footers.  As a designer it can be the last thing you think about, but still a very important part of the site and shouldn’t be slapped together last minute.

A footer is your last word - and many sites use this as their social connection hub, filling it full of ways that a client can connect with the company.  A more traditional approach is to fill the footer full of the menu items, which has also been a time honoured SEO tactic that allows you to say a keyword on the page again, but has started to fall out of favour with the simple streamlined sites of today.

Make your footer interesting! Add videos, social media content, maps. Footers don’t have to be boring!
Throw in an offer! Once you’ve hooked them with your awesome page content, BAM!  Use that footer to catch them with that call to action!

One item that a footer should never lack, is the copyright information.

I constantly search sites for information for my clients.  It’s really frustrating to find great information, scroll to the bottom and find the copyright date is 2005. How do I know the information contained on this page is still relevant? Did you know that an outdated copyright date at the bottom of your website can chase away potential customers?

Yeah, I know - remembering to change that date is the last thing on your to-do list! Well, here’s a great little piece of HTML and PHP that will auto-populate your copyright date into your website for you.  BAM!  No more worrying that your copyright date is wrong!

First make sure that you can input PHP code.  If you’re using Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla! or any other content management system, ensure that you have PHP turned on.  If you’re using a straight HTML page, you’ll have to change the page extension to .php to allow the PHP to run.

Here are two options for your copyright date.
If you want your day to include your start date like 2006 - 2015 then this ones for you:
<p>copyright &copy; 2006-<?php echo date('Y'); ?> mysite.com</p>

If you want your copyright to only include the current year, then this one is for you:
<p id="copyright"><?php print "<div class=\"copyright\">Copyright &copy; My Company Name " . date("Y") . "</div>"; ?>

If you’re using Drupal you want to add a simple login/logout link in the footer.  Unlike the Drupal user block which has username and password fields, this is just a simple small link to allow a site user easy access to the login page.
<p>
<?php
global $user;
if ($user->uid != 0) {
  // code for the logout button
  echo "<a href=\"/user/logout\">Log out</a>";
}
else {
  // code for the login button
  echo "<a href=\"?q=user\">Login</a>";
}
?></p>
